The Secretariat for Catholic Education (SfCE) supports over fifty Catholic Church schools in Malta and Gozo, serving about one-third of the student population from kindergarten to sixth-form levels. Operating under the Maltese Episcopal Conference, the Secretariat is led by Rev Dr. Charles Mallia, with Dr. Ian Mifsud as Director General. It acts as a liaison with the Ministry for Education and Sports, the Malta Union of Teachers, and other stakeholders, providing administrative, curricular, and psycho-social support. The SfCE also manages the admissions process and is a member of OIEC and ECCE. Its departments cover areas such as curricular entitlement, student services, pastoral care, finance, human resources, and IT support. The Curriculum Entitlement Department ensures accessible education through specialized teams, while the Student Support Services Department offers psychosocial support via various professionals. The Pastoral Care Department promotes the Catholic identity and mission of the schools. Finance, HR, and IT departments ensure the sustainable operation of the schools. Recently, the organisation has invested in a new department focusing on the management of Funding programmes to assist church schools in accessing, implementing and managing such projects. The Secretariat employs approximately 120 professionals and has its main offices in Floriana, with additional offices in Balzan.
