Special Secondary School Nr. 1 is an educational unit in Bucharest, which has as main field of activity the provision of educational and therapeutic services to children with special educational needs. The students of the school are diagnosed with moderate, severe, profound and / or associated mental deficiencies, aged between 7 and 16 years. The school also offers home education services for non-displaced students and support services for students with special educational needs integrated into mainstream education.
The school is located in a building over 100 years old, built in 1889 on land granted by the Ministry of Education by the Ministry of Cults, being in the vicinity of the church “Popa Rusu”.
Originally called “Helping School no. 1”, it was the first institution in Bucharest that, since 1954, has educated students with mental disabilities.
It received its current name after 1993, when all schools for students with mental disabilities were called “special schools”. The school has a boarding school program and is intended for training, education, recovery of students with mental disabilities.
