Project Summary: The rapid depletion of natural resources and the increase in environmental problems necessitate the development of sustainable solutions. High-level policy documents such as the European Green Deal, UNESCO Heritage Conventions and Turkey’s 11th Development Plan aim for a society that is respectful of natural life and historical heritage and has high environmental awareness, and encourage awareness-raising activities in this context.
The “On the Trail of Heritage: From Nature to Art” project, developed by the Samsun Maturation Institute, aims to contribute to the survival of cultural heritage and the creation of environmental awareness by addressing traditional arts from a sustainable perspective.
The Institute is a Lifelong Learning Institution that researches cultural values, keeps traditional arts alive and promotes them. The Institute conducts studies in the fields of R&D, art and design, handicrafts, embroidery, clothing production, jewelry, ceramics and glass. In addition to the arts on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List such as marbling, tile, calligraphy and miniature, studies are carried out in the workshops of handicrafts registered in the national inventory such as illumination, lace, embroidery and glass shaping. In addition, ecological printing and natural dyeing methods are being tried by using hemp and natural fibers in the production processes, and efforts are being made to prevent chemical pollution. The studies in this field are still in the R&D phase, and the aim of the project is to increase institutional experience and collaborations. Thus, a contribution will be made to the aim of “expanding learning opportunities between citizens and generations and providing new skills”, which is one of the priorities of adult education.
Activities planned to be carried out within the scope of the project:
- Workshops: In workshops to be held in … countries and Turkey, artistic products will be created by combining natural and recycled materials with traditional handicraft techniques with participants consisting of young people and adults. In this process, the traditional art and handicraft practices specific to each country will be handled.
- Sharing of Good Practices: Good practices in sustainable art and cultural heritage in partner countries will be shared, and a cultural heritage event will be organized in each country.
- International Art and Culture Seminars: Face-to-face and online seminars will be held with the participation of experts, artists and academics on how cultural heritage can be kept alive through ecological transformation.
- Digital Publications and Exhibitions: Artworks, exhibitions and workshops produced in the project will be exhibited on online platforms, and the knowledge and experiences gained within the scope of the project will be shared in a digital booklet.
